Abstract

Introduction: The use of cannabinoids in the treatment of orofacial pain has gained relevance due to their identified analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, considering the limitations of conventional treatments, which often fail to provide efficacy and present harmful side effects. Chronic orofacial pain, including temporomandibular disorders and neuropathic pain, is a complex condition that affects patients' quality of life. Recent studies indicate that cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), may be effective in controlling pain and inflammation by modulating the endocannabinoid system. Objectives: This research aims to investigate the efficacy of cannabinoids in the management of orofacial pain, taking into account the need for new therapeutic approaches. In addition to identifying the factors contributing to the onset of pain, the positive effects of cannabidiol are analyzed, with a focus on its potential to improve patients' well-being. Methodology: The methodology adopted consists of a literature review based on articles, theses, protocols, and reviews retrieved from data platforms such as: Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), CAPES Theses and Dissertations Database (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel), PubMed, and Web of Science. Specific inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to select the most relevant studies. Data analysis will be carried out descriptively, with a careful reading of the results obtained in the different studies. Conclusion: Based on the established role of the endocannabinoid system in analgesia and the evidence of cannabinoid activity in mechanisms related to orofacial neuropathic pain disorders, studies conclude that cannabinoids have a therapeutic effect in these conditions, making their study and further understanding highly relevant.
